it’s just unfair sometimes

Being that I am gearing for a career in music, I caught an interesting program Frontline on PBS a few days ago. The premise of the show was basically following a couple of new artists, Sarah Hudson and Velvet Revolver, in their journeys to get their music out on the air and to your radio. It’s amazing how biased, shallow, and difficult it is to get your music in the limelight for exposure, especially with people like the RIAA up top. It’ll be interesting to see where this industry is in 2006.

There are a lot of great answers to questions at the website and I highly recommend you either watch or read what it has to say about these artists.

Velvet Revolver – a band with former Guns and Roses members featuring Slash lead by lead singer Scott Weiland formerly of Stone Temple Pilots. Will they succeed? Possibly. But it might be

too obvious, isn’t it? It’s like, “Well, Guns N’ Roses were huge, and Stone Temple Pilots were huge, so let’s put those guys together and it’s going to be huge,” you know. And it may well be. But, that’s such an old way of thinking. It’s so boring. It’s so stale. The thinking is just uninspired.

I’m going to see and hear them in concert in a week from today. Because it wasn’t free, I decided that I should probably pass this time. My bosses at the internship put us on the list so we’re in if we can afford it! It’s exciting to be included in a sold out concert but I really don’t know any of their music except Slither.

Sarah Hudson – On the other hand is Sarah Hudson. Her sound is different, a little mainstream pop for a her breakout song on her CD, but is less likely to make it because she’s not as “famous” as the members of Velvet Revolver. Her dad is spending a lot on marketing but it’ll be more difficult to make her career happen because of her inexperience.

I recommend watching the show if you’re interested.
